It cannot be underestimated the role organized religion played in acting as the glue that binds a people together. Without attempting to place judgment on which religion holds the most merit or even the validity of religion itself, I will explain why the founding fathers of this nation saw fit to keep it separate from government they created.

The separation of church and state has allowed scenarios, similar to these, to be prevented from happening. The Medieval Ages greatly influenced modern day. The creation of nation states, the growth of cities, increased emphasis on education and the creation of universities, the Romance languages, thriving arts, the widening scope of literary topics, and the separation of Church and State are the result of the seeds that were planted in the Medieval Ages. I strongly agree that a sharp institutional divide between church and state needs to exist, in which the church does not interfere in matters of the state and vice versa. I believe it even vital that countries, such as the United States, possess constitutions that state there will be no official state religion. In this way, religious toleration and equality will be undeniable.
Separation of church and state refers to the division of the relationship between religion and government. Various laws apply to different countries around the world about the separation of church and state. Some involve religion so much into their daily lives; it controls how their country is run. In other places, where it is not mandated as much, it becomes a problem in disputing what is and what is not right. The United States of America faces this issue as they struggle deciding what the meaning.
