The purpose of this study was to examine the immediate effects of visualizations and imagery on sports performance in athletes. This research paper provides insight on the background of why imagery works and how imagery can affect athlete directly to improve their sports performance instantly. With knowledge of whether sports imagery can immediately improve performance in athletes, sports training would be revolutionized. Athletes could learn how to advance their game to the next level with just their mind. Any athlete, trainer, or recreational player could elevate performance levels and gain an extra edge in the competition. The data found showed how an athlete could improve due to immediate actions after performing cognitive specific imagery.
The Case for Mental Imagery
EMCrit - Mental practice in the COVID19 era: Mastering PPE
Many athletes and coaches think that sports psychologists only teach mental imagery and goals setting. But this is not really the case. Weather you know it or not, you use mental rehearsal in your sport —in one way or athlete. Sports psychologists and mental game coaches simply structure mental rehearsal for athletes to get the most out of it. When you imagine or rehearse performing an action with no overt movement, you are using mental rehearsal or mental practice.
Loss of mental imagery: a case study
Visual working memory provides an essential link between past and future events. Despite recent efforts, capacity limits, their genesis and the underlying neural structures of visual working memory remain unclear. Here we show that performance in visual working memory - but not iconic visual memory - can be predicted by the strength of mental imagery as assessed with binocular rivalry in a given individual. In addition, for individuals with strong imagery, modulating the background luminance diminished performance on visual working memory and imagery tasks, but not working memory for number strings.
As Olympians gear up for the Rio games, many of those athletes have been looking for a way to land on the podium at the summer games. All of the athletes are talented and physically gifted… All of the athletes have devoted all of their time to training… All of the athletes are the very best within their sport. The difference between medaling and falling short will come down to the mental game.
