I enjoy that my classes have tried to center a broad range of authors in terms of class, gender, and race. The fact that the professors make a conscious effort to teach a diverse variety of works has really enriched my experience. English remains a top-ranked department nationally because of the strength and variety of our faculty publications, both in scholarly research and creative writing. Mark McGurl's scholarly work centers on the relation of literature to social, educational and other institutions from the late 19th century to the present. He teaches a range of classes on American literature and related topics. In The Program Era , Mark McGurl offers a fundamental reinterpretation of postwar American fiction, asserting that it can be properly understood only in relation to the rise of mass higher education and the creative writing program. McGurl asks both how the patronage of the university has reorganized American literature and—even more important—how the increasing intimacy of writing and schooling can be brought to bear on a reading of this literature.
