Hibernate on Linux (Fedora)
If you have a notebook and use it a lot in different places you might looking for a possibility to put it to sleep and wake it up again very fast. Update: actually this is not true any longer. Thanks to Tux On Ice formerly Software Suspend 2 there is a workaround which uses a swap-partition for suspending to disk and resuming from that really fast. However my distribution Fedora Core does not include kernels with Software Suspend, in particular no kernel with version 2. Aside from that the distribution kernels offer a lot of nice features and are working fine. Because of several tweaks with udev and SE-Linux using a vanilla kernel might not be a good idea.

TuxOnIce, formerly called as "Software Suspend 2", "suspend2" or "swsusp2", is an implementation of suspend-to-disk functionality in the form of a Linux kernel patch and several userspace utilities. It is an alternative to both the BIOS-driven hibernation feature found on most ThinkPad models, and the swsusp "software suspend" functionality built into recent Linux kernels. Compared to the alternatives, TuxOnIce has some unique features :. It also have the following advantages over swsusp these features are also provided, in principle, by the not-yet-stable uswsusp :.
