The poster became an instant attention getter, as the United States printed over four million copies between and , as the United States began to enter war. The astounding popularity of the poster was one of the more memorable inventions that helped the United States enlist over twenty million Americans in both of the World Wars combined. The amount of ethos, pathos, and logos, entangled in this poster obviously drew the attention of millions and persuaded Americans to join arms and fight for their country. As one can obviously see from looking at the poster, the main focus is the historical figure, Uncle Sam. He had many characteristics including: fairness, reliability, and honesty. By choosing to make Uncle Sam the central focus, Flagg created a countrywide known figure that almost every person could identify.

The purpose of a film poster is to convey the genre and themes of the film to potential viewers as well as to create excitement amongst already established fans so that they will spread the word about the film themselves. This film poster is aimed at teenagers who are both male and female but predominantly female as this film is in the teen drama genre and also has a strong romantic theme which tends to appeal more to females. The colours used are not bright or vivid which gives the impression that this film will be serious, although the title is partially written in a vibrant blue which connotes that there will be light parts to the film. The two characters featured are the protagonist, Hazel, and her love interest, Augustus and, as I mentioned earlier, it is clear that this is the case because of their positions. They are both around 17 which is likely to be a similar age to the viewer meaning that they know they will be able to relate to them in some way. Other than this the poster does not give away much about the overall themes or plot of the film and I think that this is largely due to the success of the novel that the film was based on.
